🎧 Tips & Tricks:
How to use a drum gate plugin
A drum gate VST plugin is used to clean up drum tracks by removing unwanted noise or bleed from other instruments. Here's a step-by-step guide to using one effectively:
Insert the Plugin:
Load the drum gate plugin on the track you want to clean up (e.g., snare, kick, or toms).
Set the Threshold:
Adjust the threshold so that only the drum hits you want to keep are above the threshold. Anything below it will be gated (muted).
Fine-Tune Attack and Release:
The attack controls how quickly the gate opens when a drum hit is detected. A fast attack is ideal for drums.
The release determines how quickly the gate closes after the sound. Adjust it to avoid cutting off the natural decay of the drum.
Adjust Hold Time:
The hold parameter keeps the gate open for a set amount of time before it starts to close. This can help maintain the natural sound of the drum.
Use Sidechain or Key Input (Optional):
Some drum gates allow you to use a sidechain input to trigger the gate. For example, you can use a kick drum to trigger the gate on a bass track for a rhythmic effect.
Filter the Input Signal:
Many drum gates have a filter to focus on specific frequencies. For instance, you can isolate the low-end for a kick drum or the mid-range for a snare.
Listen and Adjust:
Play the track and tweak the settings until the gate works seamlessly, removing unwanted noise without affecting the drum's natural sound.

What is ‘Rent To Own’ when it comes to music plugins?
Rent-to-own is a payment model for music plugins that allows you to pay for a plugin in small monthly instalments until you fully own it. Unlike traditional subscriptions, where you lose access if you stop paying, rent-to-own ensures that once you've completed the payments, the plugin is yours forever. This model is popular among musicians and producers because it makes high-quality plugins more affordable and accessible.
For example, platforms like Splice and Plugin Boutique* offer rent-to-own options for popular plugins like Serum, Massive, and Ozone. You can try the plugin for a few days before committing, and payments are often flexible, allowing you to pause or resume as needed.
It's a great way to build your plugin library without a large upfront investment. Are you considering trying it out?
